What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic health condition in which the body either doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t respond to insulin the way it should. Insulin regulates blood glucose and helps get it into the cells to be used for energy. When there isn’t enough insulin, or insulin isn’t responded to, the patient experiences chronically high blood sugar which over time, causes damage to the blood vessels, heart, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes typically rely on medication such as Metformin and Insulin to control blood sugar levels. However, it is important to test HbA1c and glucose regularly to ensure the condition is being properly managed.
